Memorandum book : ms., 1861 Apr. 21-July 16.

Volume (60 p.) containing Mathews' daily accounts of travels while searching for mines mostly throughout Oregon, but also in Idaho and Washington. After several weeks, he buys into a claim and begins work on it, but falls ill after a few days and sells his share. Later, he travels to San Francisco and soon heads to Sonoma. Mathews records weather conditions, number of miles traveled, towns and camps visited, and comments regarding the landscape of certain areas. Volume also contains notes with uncertain dates.
